This luncheon will focus on factors important to the successful treatment of kids with behavior problems. Having specialized in this work for decades, Dr. MacMannis will outline an integrative approach that helps parents turn things around and set limits with kids in effective, caring ways.
Topics covered:
- Applying principles from brain research and the discovery of mirror neurons
- Understanding the nature of a child’s competing “sub-selves” around behaving
- Factoring in diagnostics concerns and ADD
- Differentiating between kids who are acting out at home and/or at school
- Coaching parents in how to operate from a place of healthy detachment
- Applying techniques of paradox, reverse psychology and humor to enhance motivation
- Creating a collaborative new approach that’s introduced in a family meeting
- Uncovering and addressing the effects of parents’ own childhood issues

Don MacMannis, Ph.D. is a child and family psychologist and Clinical Director of the Family Therapy Institute of Santa Barbara. He’s specialized in the treatment of children and families for over forty years. Recently winning the title of “Best Family Therapist” in a poll taken by SBParent.com, he’s the co-author of two award-winning books: How’s Your Family Really Doing?: 10 Keys to a Happy Loving Family and Who’s the Boss?
