SBCAMFT Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement
As both members and leadership of SBCAMFT, we believe that mental health professionals are agents of change, using psychotherapy and therapeutic relationships to encourage growth. We also acknowledge that psychotherapy has historically played a role in the marginalization and oppression of specific groups, and that the therapeutic relationship continues to hold an inherent power differential. We are committed to using our privileged positions and access to resources to enact social change and awareness within our Santa Barbara community.
In recognition of this commitment, SBCAMFT leadership wholeheartedly and without reservation disavows all forms of discrimination, including, but not limited to: racism, colorism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, sexism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, classism, ableism, neuroableism, and ageism, as well as hate speech or actions that attempt to silence, threaten, and degrade others. We affirm our solidarity and allyship to uplift the voices of those who are silenced, threatened, and treated with degradation, and we are dedicated to uplifting and amplifying those voices. Embracing diversity, fostering inclusivity, and promoting justice for all is a central tenet to the mission of SBCAMFT.
We acknowledge that actions speak louder than words, and therefore work to institute practical and substantive ways of taking action within our organization and community.
The Board of SBCAMFT commits to the following action items:
-
We commit to fostering inclusive spaces where all are welcome to express their identities and experiences, and to uphold a strong sense of community for members and non-members alike. We commit to providing representation and inclusion for historically marginalized groups, and clinicians of these groups. We do this by utilizing forms of outreach, engaging in open communication, and through requests for feedback. We provide an annual scholarship for prelicensed therapists of color, with the goal of supporting equitable access to professional advancement.
-
We commit to endorsing the practice of lifelong learning and un-learning through a lens of cultural humility. We do this through events, trainings, and a designated budget for our diversity-driven initiatives. We seek to intentionally use the generous time provided by board members, Diversity Subcommittee members, and volunteers.
-
We commit to creating valuable opportunities for connection, particularly for community members from historically marginalized groups. We do so through forming affinity groups and book clubs, and in encouraging consultation and mentorship.
-
We commit to programming that increases awareness around diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. We commit to challenging oppressive and systemic societal inequities, particularly within local therapy-based agencies, practices, and academic settings.
Our goal is to cultivate a sense of belonging for all, where every member of our community feels valued, respected, and supported. Wishing health and healing to you and yours. May you find yourself centered in feelings of abundance, safety, belonging, and peace.
